Shingle Roofing Installation
Shingles
” IKO Dynasty Architectural Shingle preferred by Parlament Roofing and Construction”
So What is the Difference?
3-TAB SHINGLES
3-Tab shingles have been around for decades. The reason these shingles are called 3-Tab is because there are 3 distinct tabs per every shingle. The tabs were designed to allow the water to flow off the shingles more easily. Aesthetically, the 3-tab will lay flat, providing no “texture” to the roof. They are lighter than Architectural shingles, and will not last as long. In Florida, most 3-Tab shingles don’t meet the wind requirements of 110 mph. They were originally designed for 60 mph gusts. This is why most every roof replacement has architectural shingles installed now.
ARCHITECTURAL SHINGLES
The most popular shingles on the market today are Architectural shingles. There are many different names for this kind of shingle, including; Dimensional, Laminated, 3-D and Architectural. The Architectural shingles have different size tabs that give the roof a dimensional, textured look. Most Architectural shingles on the market today come with a Life Time Pro-rated warranty.
There are many manufacturers of Architectural singles. So how can you tell them apart?
Three ways, look at the:
- Thickness
- Weight
- Quality
At Parlament Roofing, we use IKO shingles. They can weigh up to 50% more than other shingle brands. With a wind warranty starting at 110 mph sustained winds, that will shatter the 3-Tab 60 mph warranty, and durability that will shatter the 3-Tab 10 to 15 year life span, IKO has brought shingles into the new century. IKO makes a shingle we can stand behind to protect your family, as well as ours.
When to replace my roof?
The average shingle roof, depending on when it was installed and the quality of shingles used, will have a lifespan of 10-15 years. That’s why Parlament Roofing uses only quality roofing shingles from IKO Industries.
A 3-Tab shingle and an Architectural shingle are similar; they both lose their protective granule coatings when they are old and ready to be changed.
Worn 3-Tab shingles are easier to spot, because they will start curling at the bottom edges. This is caused when the asphalt dries out and it begins to pull the shingle back. In other words it makes them shrink and curl.
An Architectural shingle will not curl noticeably because it is a laminated shingle. It is made from two shingles laminated on top of each other. The only visible way to notice when an Architectural shingle has gone bad is to look for shining areas. This is caused when the sun hits the exposed fiberglass, which happens when the granules and asphalt have come off of the shingle when it is old and worn.
WORN-OUT 3-TAB SHINGLES
WORN-OUT ARCHITECTURAL SHINGLES
Parlament Roofing recognizes that having your roof repaired or replaced is never convenient; it pales in comparison to the inconvenience and cost of ignoring the impact of what your roof has endured over the years. The older a roof gets, the more sensitive it becomes to the factors of direct sunlight and rain. Many people are surprised to learn the extent of their roof damage especially when their shingles appear to look fine.
